Discover Portugal, a small European gem steeped in history from the Age of Discovery (1400-1600) with its trendy modern-day food and wine scene. Positioned on the Atlantic coastline and surrounded by Spain, Portugal has its own unique language and culture based on land, sea, and former wealth as a world power.
We start with a visit to the capital city of Lisbon where we discover the various quarters of the city taking in the architecture and beautiful tile facades, sweeping views over the city and sea, and visit monuments and museums as we retrace the history of powerful Portugal in its heyday. We’ll take a day trip to Sintra, the nearby summer getaway spot of Portugal’s kings. Enjoy a visit to the Pena Palace as well as castle ruins, lush tropical gardens and perhaps a little time for shopping.
Then, on to Porto with a rest stop in the small, picturesque, seaside village of Nazare. We spend the next several days discovering Porto and the Douro River. We’ll orient ourselves to Porto with a tuk-tuk tour and have another chance to ride trolleys, cable cars, and a funicular just like we did in Lisbon. Porto is known worldwide as the home of Port wine. We’ll discover how Port is made, cruise the Douro River where the grapes are grown and do some tasting.
